Alan Schaefer is an accomplished Senior Executive, Entrepreneur, Consultant, and Board Member with more than 34 years of success in the consumer-packaged goods, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries. Leveraging extensive experience in sales, marketing, and operations for international Fortune 500 companies, Alan is an asset for small to large consumer facing or consumer packaged goods companies. Alan’s broad areas of expertise include leadership, team management, business strategy, sales, and marketing.
Throughout his executive career, Alan has held leadership positions at Johnson & Johnson, International Playtex Inc., and GlaxoSmithKline. In 2009, Alan Co-Founded the Venti Brand Consulting Group, and then PivotPoint Innovation in 2012. Both were designed to work with the Pittsburgh based, 501(3)(b) incubators focused on start-ups coming out of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. Their early work was specifically with the Idea Foundry, then expanded to Innovation Works. They provided both advisory roles as well as much needed resource to young companies looking to move from proof of principle of their technology and innovation, to actual revenue traction of their business models.
As VP of U.S. Sales and Marketing at GSK, Alan led a 400-person sales organization that successfully launched three Rx-to-OTC switches that added over $500mm in sales. His marketing teams managed various Oral Care, Analgesic, and Dermatology brands contributing over $300mm in sales. During his time as CEO and General Manager at GSK, Australia, and New Zealand, Alan was at the helm of the well documented “Panadol Extortion” case. He successfully led the team and business through a complex crisis management exercise that experienced two separate consumer poisonings, two product recalls and relaunches, a nine-month police case with a successful conviction of the perpetrator, and an extensive public relations campaign. That effort yielded the business numerous PR awards for their management of the crisis. In his final years at GSK, Alan led a 300 person sales and marketing team focused on 37k healthcare professionals and a portfolio of both prescription and over the counter medicines. His team successfully launched the first, FDA approved Rx Dermatology Brand in the company’s history.

Alan earned his BBA in Industrial Relations and Marketing from The University of Iowa Tippie College of Business, where he attended on an Athletic Scholarship.
